Early Life

Ferguson was born on February 12, 1984, in Oxnard, California but grew up in Michigan. He went to Muskegon Catholic Central High School where he was a three-sport athlete in football, baseball, and wrestling.

As a football player in his school time, he was the starting defensive back for the 2000 Division 8 state football champion and was a three-time All-State selection in wrestling. After school, he joined Central Michigan University followed by Grand Valley State University. Although he did not complete his degree, he had a successful collegiate wrestling career winning the 2006 National Collegiate Wrestling Association wrestling championship in the 165-lb division.

Ferguson’s professional career in MMA started in 2007. His notable fight during his early career was with Joe Schilling where he won via Submission. His first loss of his career came against Karen Darabedyan in a unanimous decision.

In 2010, Ferguson was accepted to compete in season 13 of the “The Ultimate Fighter” series. He competed as a welterweight on The Ultimate Fighter: Team Lesnar vs. Team dos Santos. In his first fight, he defeated Justin Edwards by knockout in the first round. After that, he faced Ryan McGillivray in the quarterfinals and won by a TKO in the first round. In semifinals, he faced Chuck O’Neil and advanced to the final.

Tony made his UFC debut at the Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale against Ramsey Nijem. He defeated Nijem by knockout in the first round to win a UFC contract. After that fight, he returned to the lightweight division and faced Aaron Riley. He was declared a winner via TKO.

At the Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale, Ferguson faced MMA veteran Yves Edwards. He won via unanimous decision. His next fight was against Michael Johnson and he lost the bout via unanimous decision.

Since his defeat to Michael Johnson, Ferguson hasn’t lost a single fight. He has dominated fighters like Mike Rio, Katsunori Kikuno, Danny Castillo, Abel Trujillo, Gleison Tibau, Josh Thomson, Edson Barboza, Lando Vannata, Rafael dos Anjos, Kevin Lee, Anthony Pettis, and Donald Cerrone.

Ferguson is now scheduled to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC Lightweight Championship on April 18, 2020, at UFC 249.

Ferguson and his wife had a difficult past. In March 2019, Cristina filed a restraining order against Tony, alleging uncharacteristic behavior, not sleeping for days, tearing apart their home fireplace, and believing that a tracking chip was inserted into his leg during his leg surgery.

In April 2019, Cristina dropped the restraining order claiming that she filed the restraining order as a precautionary measure to get Ferguson the help needed for his mental state.
